In August 2019, the final phase of the Kunsthalle Darmstadt`s general renovation, which started in 2014, will begin. The forecourt will temporarily become a construction site from which something new will emerge. Can the sensual qualitiy of a building site be transferred to an exhibition? Construction sites mark the end of one state an the beginning of another. They require planning and inprovisation, patient adherence and departure from the familiar. They are constant moments of transition and form a literally deafening exceptional experience. But even away from the noise they produce, construction sites with their strange materials and movements sequences create their own sensuality. Whether cursed or admired, their monstrous aesthetics ensure thar every building site has an audience. In art, cooperative projects take on the form of building sites that are not only metaphorical, but are intended to have a real impact on the surrounding city as well. Hidden behind building fences and scaffolding, a spectacle of impressive precision takes place.

In the exhibition «Helmpflicht», the construction site comes into the focus of art. The works show captured moments of transience and transition or create them themselves. Sometimes it is also about dangers, shifts and their potential failure.

Together with the Kunsthalle Darmstadt, the Darmstädter Sezession is developing an experimental format as part of the festival «Den Bogen Spannen – 100 Jahre Darmstädter Sezession». During the reconstruction of the Kunsthalle`s forecourt in August and September 2019, the experiment will take advantage of the special situation and address it for one month.
