RUSHNYK - desastres de la guerra
‹The Disasters of War›
Rushnyk, a woven linen cloth with red crossstitch
embroidery, is a symbol of hospitality
and an integral part of Ukrainian folk art. Each
region has its own motifs and peculiarities of
the composition, which are passed on from
generation to generation, from mother to
daughter.
‹The Disasters of War›, a series of 82 prints by
the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, were
created between 1810 and 1814. The aquatint
etchings depict the atrocities committed by
Napoleon‘s soldiers in battle with the rebellious
Spanish population against the French
occupation. The images show crimes on both
sides, rapes, shootings, massacres, piles of
corpses.
The series ‹Rushnyk - The Disasters of War›
combines both art forms into embroidery
images. The terrible images of war are contrasted,
reduced to their outlines and filled with the traditional embroidery patterns, thus updating Goya to the current events in Ukraine.
Over a year-long process of joint embroidery
work with German women and refugees from
Ukraine, lasting human relationships were
created that overcome cultural differences and
language barriers and make up an integrative
part of the project.
