Seven tenths of the earth's surface is covered with water and a look at the sky strengthens the power of the symbolic color blue for infinity. The painter Takeshi Makishima, who grew up in the Japanese metropolis of Fukuoka by the sea in 1980 and graduated from the Düsseldorf Art Academy, thinks in great distances of space and time. At the invitation of the director of the Kunsthalle Darmstadt, he exhibits a series of six new canvas paintings specially created for the foyer of the house, which make everything appear small and large at the same time. Various marine snail species, a man with an umbrella, a mask - the sometimes puzzling motifs suggest either calm or directed movement. An outline figure on a pedestal in ‹Peron's Sea Butterfly›, which is reminiscent of Rodin's Thinker, invites visitors to take a philosophical eye-walk.
